About Teej
Teej is a celebrated Hindu festival observed primarily by women in North and Central India — especially in Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. It honors the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is a festival of love, marriage, and the monsoon season. Married women pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands, while unmarried women pray for a good husband. The festival is filled with swings, songs, mehndi, and beautiful traditional dress.
Types of Teej
There are three main Teej celebrations — Hariyali Teej (Green Teej, in the monsoon month of Shravan), Kajari Teej (celebrated in Bhadrapada), and Hartalika Teej (the most widely observed, celebrated just before Ganesh Chaturthi). Each has its own regional traditions, but all share the emphasis on women dressing in their finest traditional attire, often in green to celebrate the lush monsoon season.
